디즈니의 정치적 올바름(PC)에 대한 몇 가지 소고
A Few Thoughts on Disney's Political Correctness (PC)

실사 영화 ‘백설공주’ 예고 편에 엄청난 숫자의 ‘싫어요’ 가 기록되어 논란을 일으켰다. 우선 캐스팅에 대한 반발이다. 백설(白雪)이라는 말 자체가 ‘눈처럼 흰 피부’를 의미한다. 이런 흰 피부의 백설공주역에 라틴계 배우 레이첼 지글러를 캐스팅한 것에 대대적인 반대의 목소리가 터져 나왔다.
A huge number of ‘dislikes’ were recorded in the trailer for the live-action movie ‘Snow White’, causing controversy. First of all, there is a backlash against casting. The word Baekseol (白雪) itself means ‘skin as white as snow.’ There was widespread opposition to the casting of Latina actress Rachel Ziegler in the role of the fair-skinned Snow White.
디즈니는 백설공주만이 아니라 백설공주와 같이 등장하는 난쟁이들도 키가 크거나 여성, 혹은 유생 인종으로 변화를 꾀했다. 무엇보다 난쟁이 역을 하던 왜소증 장애 배우들이 일자리를 잃었다고 하니 이에 대한 반대의 목소리가 더 나올 법했다.
Disney attempted to change not only Snow White but also the dwarfs that appeared with Snow White to be taller, female, or of a more terrestrial race. Above all, it was said that actors with dwarfism who played dwarfs lost their jobs, so more voices opposing this were likely to come out.
이러한 백설공주의 변화는 정치적 올바름(PC)을 디즈니가 적극적으로 시도해 온 연장선에서 이해할 수가 있었다. 앞서 실사 영화 ‘인어공주’도 붉은 머리에 흰 피부인 에리얼을 검은 피부, 검은 머리의 할리 베일리를 캐스팅해서 논란이 일었다. 전문가와 평론가 그리고 일부 매체들은 호평했지만, 전체적으로 흥행은 크게 예상을 밑돌았다.
This change in Snow White could be understood as an extension of Disney's active attempts at political correctness (PC). Previously, the live-action film ‘The Little Mermaid’ also caused controversy by casting the red-haired, white-skinned Ariel as the dark-skinned, black-haired Halle Bailey. Experts, critics, and some media outlets gave it favorable reviews, but the overall box office performance fell far short of expectations.
이는 한국에서도 마찬가지 현상이었다. 그런데도 디즈니는 물러설 기미가 없다. 이는 더 분노를 자아냈다. 오히려 디즈니가 정치적 올바름에 따라 제작하는 실사 영화들의 가치를 잘 이해하거나 공감하지 못하는 관객들에게 비난의 화살을 돌리는 모양새이기 때문이다. 따라서 이러한 디즈니 태도에 너무 오만하다는 반응도 나오고 있다.
This was the same phenomenon in Korea. Despite this, Disney shows no signs of backing down. This aroused even more anger. Rather, it appears that Disney is directing criticism at audiences who do not understand or sympathize with the value of the live-action films produced in accordance with political correctness. Therefore, some are reacting to Disney's attitude as being too arrogant.
사실 디즈니가 이런 제작 방향성을 보이는 것은 어느 날 갑자기 이뤄진 것은 아니다. 매우 오래전부터 비판에 직면하였기 때문에 이를 타개하려는 노력의 일환이다. 많은 전문가와 평론가들이 젠더와 인종 관점에서 비판을 해왔기 때문이다.
In fact, Disney's decision to pursue this production direction did not happen all of a sudden. This is part of an effort to overcome criticism since it has been facing criticism for a very long time. This is because many experts and critics have criticized it from a gender and racial perspective
디즈니 주인공들이 거의 백인이고 소수인종이나 유색인종을 배제하여 차별적인 인식을 강화했다는 지적을 많이 받아왔다. 그런 데다가 이제 시장의 확장 관점에서 흑인은 물론 히스패닉, 아시아 등 유색인종을 포괄할 필요가 있었다. 물론 이러한 점은 디즈니가 직접 인정할 수는 없겠지만 말이다.
It has been widely pointed out that Disney's main characters are mostly white and exclude racial minorities or people of color, thereby reinforcing discriminatory perceptions. In addition, from the perspective of market expansion, it was necessary to include people of color such as blacks, hispanics, and asians. Of course, Disney cannot admit this directly.
더구나 정치적 올바름이라는 시대정신에 부합할 수 있기에 명분과 실리를 모두 취하는 방법이 바로 주인공들을 유색인종으로 변화시키는 연출 제작이다. 명분과 실리의 측면에서 볼 때, 디즈니에는 합당했는지 모르지만, 몇 가지 간과한 점이 있다.
Moreover, since it can fit the spirit of the times called political correctness, a way to achieve both justification and practicality is to change the main characters into people of color. In terms of justification and practicality, Disney may have made the right decision, but there were a few things overlooked.
우선 그동안 인기 있었던 캐릭터를 유색인종으로 변화시킬 때, 정작 유색인종 관객이나 팬들이 좋아할지 알 수가 없다. 마치 유튜브에서 이용자를 위해 자동 추천을 해주었는데 오히려 기분이 나쁠 수 있는 경우를 생각하게 한다. 그들은 캐릭터와 그에 따른 스토리라인 자체를 좋아할 뿐, 유색인종 여부로 콘텐츠를 소비하지 않는다.
First of all, when changing a popular character into a person of color, it is difficult to know whether audiences or fans of color will like it. It reminds me of a case where YouTube made automatic recommendations for users, but it could actually make them feel bad. They just like the characters and the storylines that come with them, and they don't consume content based on whether or not they are people of color.
특히, 백설공주는 또 다른 문화적 코드가 있다. 백설공주는 머리가 검은데 피부는 희기 때문이다. 대개 금발에 피부가 흰 백인을 떠올릴 수 있지만, 이보다 나은 캐릭터다. 더구나 현실에서 흑발에 피부가 흰 사람도 생각할 수 있다.
In particular, Snow White has another cultural code. Snow White has black hair but white skin. Most people think of white people with blonde hair and light skin, but this character is better than this. Moreover, in real life, you can also think of people with black hair and white skin.
한국 사람 가운데에도 피부가 매우 흰 사람들이 있다. 오히려 백인들은 붉은 피부에 가깝다. 서양인만이 하얀 피부를 갖는다는 것도 편견이다. 아울러 인류 보편적으로 하얀색에 대한 흠모는 있었기 때문에 하얀 피부 자체를 거부할 이유가 없다.
Among Koreans, there are people with very white skin. Rather, white people are closer to red skin. It is also a prejudice that only Westerners have white skin. In addition, since there is universal admiration for white skin among mankind, there is no reason to reject white skin itself.
한국에서도 전통적으로 하얀 옷을 뜻하는 백의의 민족 그리고 백옥같은 피부라는 말이 있었기에 백인종을 비판 없이 선호하기에 하얀색 피부를 맹종한 것도 아니다. 따라서 백설 공주를 맥락과 관계없이 급격하게 라틴계로 기용한다면 상당한 관객이 반감을 갖거나 이탈할 수도 있다.
In Korea, too, there is a tradition of people wearing white clothes, meaning white clothes, and skin like white jade, so they prefer the white race without criticism, so they do not blindly follow white skin. Therefore, if Snow White is suddenly portrayed as Latina regardless of the context, a significant portion of the audience may feel antipathy or leave the movie.
무엇보다 디즈니가 다시 생각해야 할 점은 바로 대중문화 콘텐츠의 역할과 정체성이다. 대중문화 콘텐츠는 고객이자 팬들이 원하는 캐릭터나 스토리라인을 우선해야 한다.
Above all, what Disney needs to rethink is the role and identity of popular culture content. Pop culture content should prioritize the characters and storylines that customers and fans want.
그런데 디즈니의 태도는 독립 예술영화를 제작하고 있는 듯싶다. 자기중심적 아티스트 모델에 가깝다. 이는 또 매우 시간이 걸리는 작업에 가깝다. 더구나 새로 시도하는 창작물이 아니라 이미 원작이 있는 경우에는 기존 팬들을 더욱더 생각해야 적절하다.
However, Disney's attitude seems to be that they are producing independent art films. It is close to the egocentric artist model. This is also a very time-consuming task. Moreover, in cases where there is already an original work rather than a new creation, it is appropriate to think even more about existing fans.
그러지 못한다면 흥행은 아예 생각하지 말아야 한다. 당연히 막대한 제작비를 투입하는 것은 적절하지 않다. 전문가와 평론가는 물론 제작사가 대중문화 콘텐츠의 흥행을 좌우하던 시대는 이미 오래전에 지났다. 20세기처럼 사육하듯이 대중매체를 통해서 일방적으로 소비하던 시대가 더욱 아니라는 점을 깨달아야 했다.
If you can't do that, you shouldn't even think about box office success. Of course, it is not appropriate to invest huge production costs. The days when experts and critics, as well as production companies, influenced the success of pop culture content are long gone. We had to realize that this was no longer an era in which people unilaterally consumed food through mass media as if they were reared like in the 20th century.
그렇다고 해서 이런 정치적 올바름에 따른 콘텐츠의 변화 시도가 의미나 가치가 없다는 말은 아닐 것이다. 그것은 급격하게 이뤄진 계제가 아니며 천천히 흐름에 맡겨야 한다.
However, this does not mean that attempts to change content based on political correctness have no meaning or value. It is not something that is done in a hurry and must be left to the flow slowly.
더구나 기존의 작품과 인과관계나 연계성이 있어야 한다. 예컨대, ‘인어공주’의 에리얼이 흑인 피부를 갖게 되어 온갖 차별을 받았다가 다시 원래 대로 온다든지 원래 흑인과 백인을 오갔다는 설정 등을 생각할 수 있다.
Moreover, there must be a causal relationship or connection with existing works. For example, we can think of the setting in which Ariel from ‘The Little Mermaid’ had black skin and suffered all kinds of discrimination, but then returned to her original state, or that she originally went back and forth between black and white.
백설공주도 마찬가지로 구릿빛 피부의 캐릭터가 된 이유에 대해서 개연성을 부여해 주어야 한다. 이러한 과정이 없다면 팬심을 무시하는 것만이 아니라 작품의 완성도 면에서도 흠결이 가해지는 것일 뿐이다.
In the same way, Snow White must be given a probability as to why she became a character with bronze skin. Without this process, not only is the fan sentiment ignored, but the completeness of the work is also flawed.
대중문화는 원하는 이들이 갈구하는 것을 보여주는 것만으로도 크게 이바지한다. 그것은 관객의 변화 정도를 반(半) 발씩 수용해야 가능하다. 급격한 아방가르드 예술의 역할까지 탐내는 것은 오만이자 과욕이기에 마음을 비워야 한다.
Popular culture contributes greatly by showing people what they want. This is possible only by accommodating the degree of change in the audience half a step at a time. We must empty our minds because coveting the role of radical avant-garde art is arrogance and excessive greed.
